Best B-Schools for HRM in India – HR professional discussing programmes, fees, placements and career fit
Compare 15 leading B-schools for HRM in India across programmes, fees, placements, entrance exams, HR career paths, ROI and candidate fit.

Table of Contents

Choosing among the best B-schools for HRM in India is not a matter of taking a list of the country’s best-known MBA colleges and picking the highest-ranked one. A famous institute may offer HR only as an elective, while a less famous one may run a full two-year programme built around people management. The name on the degree tells you little about how much HR you will study, who will recruit you, or what an HR graduate actually earns.

For broader MBA college and selection research, also see PREPON’s non-IIM MBA college guide and the MBA Group Discussion guide.

Before you shortlist, check each programme on these points:

  • Whether HR is a dedicated programme or only a pathway inside a general MBA;
  • How deep the HR curriculum goes;
  • Which recruiters hire HR students specifically;
  • Whether the institute publishes HR-specific placement data;
  • Which HR career tracks the programme feeds;
  • The total programme cost and what it includes;
  • The admission route and entrance exam;
  • How easily you can move to another function later.

This article profiles 15 programmes. They are not a universal 1–15 ranking. They are grouped by programme type, and no programme is declared the overall winner. The right choice depends on your career goal, budget, exam score and how sure you are about HR.

Two terms used throughout: CTC (Cost to Company) is the total annual package an employer offers, including fixed pay, variable pay and benefits. It is not take-home salary. LPA means lakh rupees per annum.

How to Read This Article

Every fee, placement figure and admission detail carries a year or batch, because these numbers change. Confirm them on the institute’s official page before you apply.

Placement figures are used in a strict hierarchy:

  • Programme-specific HR data is used wherever it exists.
  • HR-specialisation data within a general MBA is used and labelled.
  • Combined data (HR plus other programmes) is context only and is labelled as combined.
  • Institution-wide data is used only when it is useful, with the note that HR-specific CTC is not separately disclosed.

An institution-wide average is never presented as what an HR student will earn. Where a programme-specific figure has not been established, the article says so instead of substituting another number.

Dedicated HR MBA vs General MBA with HR: Which Should You Choose Among the Best B-Schools for HRM in India?

A dedicated HR programme is a full postgraduate course whose core curriculum and placement process are built around human resources. A general MBA/PGDM with a strong HR pathway teaches broad management first and lets you specialise in HR through a major, electives and projects.

When comparing the best B-schools for HRM in India, neither programme model is automatically better. The trade-off is specialist depth and recruiter focus against flexibility.

DimensionDedicated HR ProgrammeGeneral MBA/PGDM with Strong HR Pathway
CurriculumHR subjects run through much of the two yearsCommon management core, then HR major or electives
HR depthHigh: labour relations, psychometrics, rewards, OD, analyticsModerate to high, depending on courses chosen
General management breadthPresent, usually lighterBroader: finance, marketing, operations, strategy
Recruiter concentrationMany recruiters arrive specifically for HR rolesRecruiters come for many functions; HR is one stream
Career signallingClear commitment to HRA manager who chose HR
Ability to change functionHarder, not impossibleEasier
Alumni networkDeep in HR leadershipWider across functions
Best suited forStudents certain about HRStudents who may still consider consulting, strategy or marketing

If you are certain about HR, a dedicated programme offers depth and a recruiter pool that understands your role. If you are still weighing HR against other functions, a broader MBA keeps options open.

This article classifies exact programmes, not institutions. Several IIMs run dedicated HR programmes alongside their general MBAs, so “IIM” alone does not tell you which category applies.

Detailed Profiles: Dedicated HR Programmes

XLRI Jamshedpur — PGDM (Human Resource Management)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. HR is the core of the course, not an elective layer.

Why it stands out for HR

XLRI’s PGDM (HRM) is a two-year full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management. Its official HR thrust areas cover HR planning, HR information systems, selection, performance management, training and development, compensation administration, employer-employee relations and employment/industrial relations law. General management courses sit alongside them.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The curriculum spans the traditional HR functions and the industrial-relations side. Recruiters that hired for HR roles in the 2024–26 official release included Aditya Birla Group, Accenture TAP, Airtel, Amazon, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, Colgate-Palmolive, EY, FedEx, Flipkart, HUL, ITC, KPMG, Reliance, Tata Steel and Vedanta. HR functions offered included HR consulting, recruitment, compensation and benefits, HR analytics and Chief of Staff roles. Aon, Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC recruited for HR consulting.

Admission route

Admission is through XAT followed by XLRI’s selection process. Any percentile quoted on coaching sites is a competitive estimate, not an official cut-off.

Fees and cost

This article does not quote a fee figure for XLRI. Check the current fee schedule, and separate tuition from hostel and living costs.

Placements and HR roles

XLRI’s official 2024–26 final placement release covers PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM) together. Combined figures: average CTC ₹31.40 LPA, median ₹29 LPA, 145 recruiting organisations and 576 students. These are combined BM plus HRM statistics. XLRI does not separately disclose an HRM-only average CTC in this combined 2024–26 release. Do not read ₹31.40 LPA as the HRM average.

Strengths

  • HR-focused curriculum with named thrust areas.
  • Wide HR recruiter list, including consulting firms.
  • Coverage of both HR and employment/industrial-relations law.
  • Roles span consulting, analytics and generalist HR.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • No HRM-only salary figure in the combined release, so direct comparison with other HR programmes is difficult.
  • Admission depends on XAT.
  • A specialised programme limits later functional switching.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose XLRI if you are certain about HR, can perform well in XAT, and want a broad HR recruiter base spanning corporates and consulting firms.

TISS Mumbai — MA in Human Resource Management & Labour Relations (MA HRM & LR)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. The degree is an MA, not an MBA.

Why it stands out for HR

The programme pairs human resource management with labour relations, an emphasis few other programmes share. Students compare it with MBA and PGDM HR programmes because of its management-oriented HR curriculum, HR career outcomes, recruiter ecosystem and professional positioning. The degree name remains MA HRM & LR.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The labour-relations dimension makes it relevant to industrial relations, employee relations and labour-law-heavy HR roles, as well as general HR and HRBP paths.

Admission route

For the 2026–27 academic year, admission is based on CAT 2025. TISS has officially announced that for 2027–28, admission will use CAT 2026. TISS-NET and CUET-PG are not the current route for this programme. TISS runs its own selection stages after the CAT stage, so admission cannot be reduced to one percentile.

Fees and cost

The current TISS programme page lists total course fees of approximately ₹2.035 lakh, subject to the applicable fee schedule and additional expenses. Hostel, living costs and other charges may be extra.

Placements and HR roles

A programme-specific compensation figure has not been established from the evidence used for this article, so none is quoted. Check TISS’s latest placement report for the MA HRM & LR cohort.

Strengths

  • A published fee far below most private programmes.
  • Combined HRM and labour-relations focus.
  • A CAT-based route that fits alongside IIM applications.
  • Strong fit for IR-oriented careers.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • The MA nomenclature may matter for some employers or further-study plans.
  • No programme-specific CTC is quoted here.
  • Its specialised focus limits scope to move to non-HR functions.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose TISS if you are sure about HR, want labour relations in the mix, and value a low published cost.

MDI Gurgaon — PGDM-HRM

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme.

Why it stands out for HR

MDI runs a dedicated PGDM-HRM and reports placement figures programme by programme, which is useful for HR aspirants.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The programme suits HRBP, talent management and HR consulting roles. Gurgaon sits inside a large corporate belt, which can help with internships and industry interaction, though location does not by itself determine placements.

Admission route

For 2026–28, admission is through CAT followed by MDI’s selection stages, which include group discussion, written ability test and personal interview. MDI admissions for 2027–29 are anchored to CAT 2026. Percentile figures on coaching sites are indicative only.

Fees and cost

The published programme fee for the 2026–28 programme totals approximately ₹26.55 lakh.

Placements and HR roles

MDI’s official Final Placement Report 2024–26 gives PGDM-HRM its own figures: entire-batch average CTC ₹24.8 LPA and median CTC ₹23.0 LPA. The report also states that consulting accounted for 46.2% of PGDM-HRM offers, which is useful if HR consulting is your goal. The flagship PGDM reports a higher average in the same report, so the two numbers should not be interchanged.

Strengths

  • Dedicated HR programme with HRM-specific average and median.
  • Consulting a large share of offers.
  • Corporate location.
  • Strong brand among management schools.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • High published fee, so financing matters.
  • HRM average is below the flagship PGDM average in the same report.
  • CAT is the main gateway, and competition is intense.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose MDI if you are committed to HR, particularly HR consulting, and are comfortable financing a higher fee after taking CAT and the group-and-interview rounds.

IIM Ranchi — MBA-HR (MBA-HRM)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme.

Why it stands out for HR

IIM Ranchi publishes separate placement data for its MBA, MBA-HR and MBA-BA programmes. That transparency is a meaningful advantage when you are judging HR outcomes.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The programme covers the HR value chain: recruitment and selection, learning and development, performance management, total rewards, industrial relations, labour economics and organisational behaviour. That breadth supports HRBP, talent, rewards and IR careers.

Admission route

For 2026–28, CAT is part of the domestic selection process, which also includes other stages. No single percentile decides admission.

Fees and cost

The fee schedule changes by batch, so read the current schedule on the IIM Ranchi site for exact instalments. Separate the academic fee from hostel and mess.

Placements and HR roles

IIM Ranchi’s official MBA-HR placement data for 2024–25 shows: highest CTC ₹35.30 LPA, average ₹19.02 LPA, median ₹18 LPA, average of the top 25% ₹22.87 LPA, PPO average ₹20.96 LPA, a 30% PPO rate, 26 recruiters and 53 students opted in. These are MBA-HR-specific statistics. PPO means pre-placement offer, a job offer made after an internship.

Strengths

  • HR-specific placement disclosure, including median and PPO data.
  • Coverage of the full HR value chain.
  • Dedicated programme at an IIM.
  • CAT-based route.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • A cohort of 53 opted-in students means the average can move noticeably from year to year.
  • Specialised curriculum reduces flexibility.
  • Average CTC of about ₹19 LPA sits below some HR programmes in this list.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose IIM Ranchi if you want a CAT-based IIM route with transparent HR-specific placement data.

IIM Indore — PGP-HRM (Post Graduate Programme in Human Resource Management, leading to MBA)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. It is a dedicated two-year HR programme, not a general PGP with HR electives.

Why it stands out for HR

IIM Indore maintains a separate PGP-HRM placement report series, and the curriculum has a clear analytics and psychometrics orientation.

HR curriculum and career strengths

Coursework includes HRM, labour and employment-related subjects, psychometrics, rewards and compensation, learning and development, organisational development and HR analytics. Official programme material also discusses exposure to data analytics tools.

Admission route

For the 2026–28 batch, applicants apply through CAT 2025, selecting PGP-HRM while registering for CAT. You commit to the HR programme at that stage.

Fees and cost

For the 2026–28 batch, the official fee structure lists:

  • First year (2026–27): course fee ₹10,35,000; Refundable caution deposit ₹50,000; Mess deposit ₹54,000; First-year total listed ₹11,39,000.
  • Second year (2027–28): course fee ₹10,35,000; Alumni fee including GST ₹11,800; Second-year total listed ₹10,46,800.

The two-year course fee alone is ₹20.70 lakh. Listed totals including first-year deposits and the second-year alumni charge come to approximately ₹21.858 lakh. The caution deposit is refundable, the mess deposit is adjusted against actual mess bills, and textbooks are not included.

Placements and HR roles

IIM Indore publishes a separate 2026 PGP-HRM placement report, allowing candidates to evaluate HR-specific outcomes independently of the flagship PGP. Similar separate reports exist for 2025, 2024, 2023 and earlier years. As 2023 historical evidence, not current outcomes, the official 2023 PGP-HRM report showed a batch of 38, around 20 recruiters, average CTC ₹22.65 LPA, median ₹22.20 LPA and highest ₹34.50 LPA. Read the newest report for current figures, and do not use flagship PGP numbers for HR students.

Strengths

  • A dedicated report series for the HR programme.
  • Analytics and psychometrics in the curriculum.
  • Fee structure published in detail, including deposits.
  • Application through CAT, with no separate exam.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • A small cohort (38 in 2023) makes yearly averages volatile.
  • Commitment to HR is made at application.
  • Fee is high compared with public programmes.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose IIM Indore if you want HR with an analytical edge and are sure about HR when you register for CAT.

IIM Amritsar — MBA-HR

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. It is a current full-time, two-year residential programme.

Why it stands out for HR

Its listed coursework is among the broadest in this article, and it ends in an integrated HR field project.

HR curriculum and career strengths

Courses include Fundamentals of HRM, Learning & Development, Performance Management, Labour Management Relations, Managing Diversity, Occupational Testing and Measurement, Competency Mapping and Talent Management, Employer Branding, HR Analytics, Compensation and Rewards, Organisation Change and Development, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution and employee wellbeing. That range maps onto talent, employer branding, rewards, OD and analytics careers.

Admission route

For 2026–28, CAT 2025 is used. PI shortlisting is based on predetermined CAT sectional and overall thresholds, and final admission uses a composite process with pre-PI and post-PI components. Admission cannot be reduced to a single expected percentile.

Fees and cost

The institute publishes a dedicated 2026–28 MBA-HR fee schedule; Candidates should check the current schedule for the exact instalment-wise amount.

Placements and HR roles

The evidence used here does not establish a programme-specific compensation figure for this programme, so the article does not quote one. Check IIM Amritsar’s latest MBA-HR placement release.

Strengths

  • Wide list of specialised HR courses.
  • Integrated HR field project.
  • Explicit coursework in employer branding, diversity and wellbeing.
  • CAT-based route.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • No programme-specific CTC is quoted in this article, so outcomes must be checked directly.
  • Specialised curriculum limits flexibility.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose IIM Amritsar if you want a CAT-based dedicated HR programme with an unusually wide syllabus and will check the latest placement release before deciding.

IIM Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) — PGPM-HR (MBA in HR)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. The PGPM-HR was launched in 2020 and awards an MBA in HR.

Why it stands out for HR

It is an IIM programme built specifically for HR aspirants, with a separate fee-waiver route that can lower the cost for eligible students.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The design blends HR immersion with business immersion, which suits HRBP and generalist HR roles. Check the current curriculum document for the exact course list.

Admission route

Selection is through CAT followed by the IIM selection process, which includes a personal interview. Shortlisting thresholds are set by the institute and should not be confused with coaching-site estimates.

Fees and cost

The official 2026–28 programme fee for PGPM and PGPM-HR is ₹19.5 lakh, excluding the caution deposit and mess advance. Official term-wise information lists a refundable caution deposit of ₹30,000 and a mess advance of ₹24,000 per term, subject to revision. The Academic Fee Waiver Scheme gives a 50% waiver of academic fees to financially needy students selected under institute criteria, applicable to 2% of students registering for PGPM and PGPM-HR.

Placements and HR roles

A programme-specific final-placement figure has not been established from the official evidence used for this article, so none is quoted. Check the PGPM-HR figures in IIM Trichy’s latest placement report, and do not read the flagship PGPM numbers as HR outcomes.

Strengths

  • A dedicated HR programme at an IIM.
  • Fee lower than several private peers.
  • A published fee-waiver scheme.
  • CAT-based route.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • No programme-specific CTC is quoted here.
  • A newer programme (2020) with a shorter alumni track record.
  • Specialised curriculum limits functional switching.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose IIM Trichy if you want a CAT-based IIM HR programme at a moderate fee, particularly if the waiver scheme could apply to you.

IMI New Delhi — PGDM (HRM)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. Current official information for the 2026–28 cycle describes a 24-month full-time programme.

Why it stands out for HR

IMI Delhi accepts three exam routes and publishes HR-programme outcomes.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The programme suits HRBP, talent and general HR roles. The Delhi location gives access to a large corporate base, though location alone does not decide placements.

Admission route

For 2026 admissions, IMI Delhi accepts CAT 2025, XAT 2026 and GMAT within the institute’s specified validity window. Selection continues beyond the score.

Fees and cost

The official programme fee is approximately ₹23.54 lakh. Hostel and living costs should be checked separately.

Placements and HR roles

For the 2023–25 batch, the programme page reports average CTC of approximately ₹16.32 LPA and median approximately ₹14.74 LPA. These are the latest figures used in this article, so look for a newer release.

Strengths

  • Published HR-programme placement figures.
  • Three accepted exams.
  • Delhi location.
  • Dedicated HR focus.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • Figures are for 2023–25.
  • Average CTC is lower than several peers in this list.
  • Fee is substantial next to public options.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose IMI Delhi if you want a dedicated HR programme in Delhi and have a CAT, XAT or GMAT score to work with.

XISS Ranchi — PGDM-HRM

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme.

Why it stands out for HR

XISS offers a dedicated PGDM-HRM at one of the lowest private-institute fees in this list, with an admission route that includes CMAT.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The programme suits general HR, HRBP and IR-oriented careers.

Admission route

For 2026 admissions, XISS accepts only CAT 2025, XAT 2026 and CMAT 2026. Official GDPI-call thresholds for PGDM-HRM in 2026 are:

  • Unreserved: CAT 60 percentile, XAT 60 percentile, CMAT 70 percentile.
  • Reserved: CAT 45 percentile, XAT 45 percentile, CMAT 60 percentile.

These are official thresholds for being called to the group discussion and personal interview. They are not a promise of final admission. XISS says 50% of seats are filled from CAT/XAT applicants and 50% from CMAT applicants.

Fees and cost

The 2026–28 published fee structure totals ₹12,05,500, including a ₹5,000 refundable caution deposit. The institute states the academic amount excluding the refundable security as ₹12,00,500. Hostel fees are not included.

Placements and HR roles

No programme-specific compensation figure is quoted here because the evidence base used for this article does not establish one.

Strengths

  • Published fee of about ₹12 lakh, well below several private peers.
  • Three national exams accepted.
  • A dedicated seat pool for CMAT applicants.
  • Dedicated HR programme.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • No HR-specific CTC is quoted here, so outcomes are harder to benchmark.
  • Hostel costs are additional.
  • A specialised programme limits functional switching.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose XISS if budget is a priority, you are committed to HR, and CMAT is your strongest exam.

NMIMS Mumbai — MBA Human Resources

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. NMIMS School of Business Management runs a distinct two-year, full-time MBA Human Resources in Mumbai, not MBA Core with a few electives.

Why it stands out for HR

The published curriculum is HR-specific, and NMIMS reports MBA-HR placement data separately.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The programme has 43 credit courses across six trimesters and 12 compulsory non-credit value-added workshops, with an enhanced focus on data and HR analytics. Current areas include Managing People, Organisational Psychology, Sociology of Work, Labour Laws, Employee Rewards and Recognition, Industrial Relations, Talent Planning and Acquisition, Competency Mapping and an introduction to People Analytics. That spans behavioural science, law, rewards, talent and analytics.

Admission route

Admission requires a valid NMAT by GMAC score, with NMIMS considering first-attempt scores, followed by further selection stages such as a personal interview. Qualifying cut-offs vary by year and programme.

Fees and cost

NMIMS publishes programme fees through its admission material and offer process. Confirm the current full-time MBA Human Resources fee for the applicable admission cycle before comparing total cost. Do not use fees for NMIMS’s online MBA as a proxy.

Placements and HR roles

For 2025–26, official placement information reports 37 MBA-HR recruiters and an MBA-HR average CTC of approximately ₹19.08 lakh. This is separate from MBA Core, which reported a higher average (₹24.6 lakh); The two must not be blended.

Strengths

  • HR-specific curriculum and placement reporting.
  • Recruiter count disclosed.
  • Mumbai location with a large HR community.
  • Explicit people-analytics content.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • HR average is lower than MBA Core’s at the same institute.
  • Fee must be confirmed from the current admission material.
  • Admission needs NMAT rather than CAT.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose NMIMS if you want a Mumbai-based dedicated HR programme with analytics content and can perform well in NMAT.

University of Delhi — MBA (Human Resource Development)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. It is offered by the Department of Commerce, Faculty of Commerce and Business, University of Delhi, at the Delhi School of Economics campus.

Why it stands out for HR

It is a full-time, two-year postgraduate programme of four semesters, with roots going back to 1995 under its earlier MHROD name. It combines a university degree with a very low published fee.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The programme is built around human resource development within a commerce faculty. It suits students who value an academic setting and a low fee.

Admission route

CAT forms part of the selection process. The precise weighting of CAT, academics and other selection components can change by admission cycle, so applicants should use the current Department of Commerce admission brochure. For example, official 2025–27 admissions used CAT 2024 plus academic-score weightage.

Fees and cost

Official University of Delhi fee documentation effective from 2024–25 lists ₹53,980 for MBA (IB/HRD) postgraduate fees under the applicable payment structure. University fees can be revised, so confirm the current cycle. Hostel and living costs are extra.

Placements and HR roles

A programme-specific compensation figure has not been established from the evidence used for this article, so none is quoted.

Strengths

  • Published fee under ₹1 lakh (2024–25 documentation).
  • Established programme since 1995.
  • University degree at the Delhi School of Economics campus.
  • CAT-based route.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • No programme-specific CTC is quoted here.
  • Fewer structured placement disclosures in this article than for several private peers.
  • Selection weighting varies by cycle.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose DU if cost is decisive, you are comfortable with an academic environment, and you have a strong CAT score and undergraduate record.

JBIMS Mumbai — MHRD (Masters in Human Resource Development)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. The MHRD is a two-year full-time master’s degree started in 2019, separate from JBIMS’s flagship MMS, with an intake of 30 students.

Why it stands out for HR

It is a small-cohort HR programme in Mumbai with an officially stated set of HR thrust areas.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The official HR thrust areas are Talent Attraction, Compensation Administration, Human Resource Management, Performance Management, Welfare and Industrial Relations & Labour Laws, Human Resources Information Systems, and Learning and Development. That maps onto rewards, IR, talent and HR-systems careers.

Admission route

The official admission procedure uses a MAH-CET or CAT score, followed by an In Person Assessment (IPA). The IPA includes a Group Activity and other assessment components specified by JBIMS. Percentiles quoted for the flagship MMS are not MHRD cut-offs.

Fees and cost

JBIMS publishes admission notices separately for MHRD. Candidates should check the current MHRD admission notice or offer for the applicable programme fee. The flagship MMS fee should not be used as a substitute for the MHRD fee.

Placements and HR roles

MHRD-specific average or median CTC is not quoted here because programme-specific compensation has not been established from the evidence used for this article. MMS placement figures must not be read as MHRD outcomes.

Strengths

  • Dedicated HR programme with clearly stated thrust areas.
  • IR and labour-law content.
  • A 30-seat cohort.
  • Mumbai location.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • MHRD-specific fee and CTC are not quoted here.
  • A younger programme (2019) with a shorter placement history.
  • Very small intake means limited seats.

Choose JBIMS MHRD if you are Mumbai-focused, want a small HR cohort, and will confirm the current fee and outcomes from JBIMS’s notices before applying.

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme. It is a two-year fully residential master’s programme in Human Resource Management, offered by the School of Human Resource Management. It grew from a full-fledged PGDM-HRM launched in 2011 and has run as MBA-HRM since 2014.

Why it stands out for HR

It is an HR-only school with over a decade as a standalone programme, drawing on XIMB’s HR specialisation, which dates back to 1987.

HR curriculum and career strengths

The programme is grounded in Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour and Industrial Relations, with a holistic business understanding. That suits HRBP, talent and IR-inclined careers.

Admission route

For the 2027 admission cycle, accepted tests are XAT 2027, CAT 2026, GMAT conducted in 2025/2026, NMAT 2026 and XGMT 2027. Shortlisted candidates may be called for a Group Discussion, Writing Ability Test and Personal Interview. Final selection also considers past academics and relevant work experience.

Fees and cost

The 2026 fee schedule lists ₹11,00,000 for each year’s course fee, so ₹22 lakh in two-year course fees, plus the university’s published charges: a ₹1,00,000 Development Fund, ₹40,000 per year for course materials, ₹20,000 per year for IT expenses and a ₹10,000 University Alumni Activities Fee. Accommodation and living costs should be checked separately.

Placements and HR roles

XIM University reports 100% summer placement for the 2025–27 BM and HRM cohorts. That refers to summer internship placement, not final salary placement. A current MBA-HRM-only final-placement average or median is not quoted here because it has not been established from the official evidence used for this article.

Strengths

  • HR-only school with a long history.
  • Five accepted entrance routes, including XGMT.
  • Curriculum grounded in HRM, OB and IR.
  • Residential campus.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • No HRM-only final-placement figures are quoted here.
  • Total cost exceeds the ₹22 lakh course fee once institutional charges are added.
  • Selection considers work experience and academics alongside test scores.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose XIM University if you are sure about HR, hold a strong score in XAT, CAT, NMAT or GMAT (or want XGMT as an alternative), and want an HR-only school.

SIBM Pune — MBA (Human Resource Management – Integrated AI Analytics)

Programme type: Dedicated HR Programme (new). It is a full-time, two-year residential programme starting from Academic Year 2027–28, with an intake of 30 students.

Why it stands out for HR

It is one of the few programmes designed explicitly around HR combined with AI and analytics. It is offered by Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) Pune, a different institute from SCMHRD Pune, whose HR specialisation is profiled separately below.

HR curriculum and career strengths

Official positioning covers data literacy, algorithmic understanding, digital ethics, AI governance, bias mitigation, human-machine collaboration and AI-enabled HR decision-making. That suits people analytics, HR technology and HR strategy careers.

Admission route

Admission is through SNAP, followed by SIBM Pune’s selection process. Check the SNAP 2026 registration deadlines and the separate SIBM programme registration on the official portals.

Fees and cost

Candidates should consult SIBM Pune’s official 2027–29 fee schedule for the programme’s current academic, hostel and mess charges.

Placements and HR roles

No batch has yet graduated, so the programme has no final-placement track record. No salary outcomes are quoted or implied.

Strengths

  • Curriculum built around HR plus AI and analytics.
  • Emphasis on ethics, governance and bias.
  • Offered by an established Symbiosis institute.
  • SNAP-based route.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • No graduating batch or placement history.
  • Only 30 seats.
  • Fee must be taken from the official schedule.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose SIBM Pune if you want an AI-oriented HR programme, are comfortable being part of an early cohort, and have a strong SNAP score.

Detailed Profile: General MBA with Strong HR Pathway

SCMHRD Pune — MBA with Human Resources Specialisation

Programme type: General MBA with Strong HR Pathway. SCMHRD’s flagship MBA allows Human Resources as a major or specialisation. It is not a separately titled MBA-HR degree, and it is distinct from SIBM Pune’s new dedicated HR-and-AI MBA.

Why it stands out for HR

SCMHRD publishes HR-specialisation placement outcomes and internship data, which makes its HR pathway easier to judge than most general MBAs.

HR curriculum and career strengths

You take the common MBA core, then choose HR as a specialisation. Prominent HR roles include HR analyst, consultant, recruitment, HR generalist and HRBP-type roles.

Admission route

Admission is through SNAP followed by the institute’s selection stages. Coaching-site percentile estimates are not official cut-offs.

Fees and cost

For the 2026–28 MBA batch, SCMHRD lists an academic fee of ₹6,45,500 per instalment, across four instalments over the two years, so academic fees total approximately ₹25.82 lakh. There is a refundable institute deposit of ₹20,000 and a refundable hostel deposit of ₹20,000. Hostel and mess are additional, and later-year accommodation and mess charges can change.

Placements and HR roles

HR-specialisation data for 2023–25: average CTC ₹22.16 LPA, median ₹21.63 LPA, highest ₹35.50 LPA. SCMHRD also publishes HR-specialisation internship data.

Strengths

  • HR-specialisation placement and internship disclosure.
  • Flexibility to change specialisation.
  • SNAP route.
  • Median close to the average in the HR report.

Limitations / trade-offs

  • HR is a specialisation, not the whole programme.
  • HR figures quoted here are for 2023–25.
  • Academic fee is high before hostel costs.

Who should choose this B-school?

Choose SCMHRD if you lean towards HR but want the option to shift, and can perform well in SNAP.

Is HR Still a Good Career in the Age of AI?

For aspirants comparing the best B-schools for HRM in India, career resilience matters as much as the first placement.

HR remains a viable career, but the work is changing. AI does not remove the need for people managers. It changes which tasks are automated and which skills carry value.

  • Recruitment and screening: tools can sort applications and schedule interviews. People still judge fit, negotiate offers and manage candidate experience.
  • Workforce planning: analytics help forecast headcount and skill gaps, but interpreting them needs business understanding.
  • People analytics: attrition, engagement and performance data are used more widely, so analytics literacy matters.
  • Performance management: tools collect more data, but fairness and judgement stay human responsibilities.
  • Employee listening: sentiment tools exist, but acting on findings needs communication and credibility.
  • Learning: platforms personalise content, while designing capability plans still needs judgement.
  • HR operations: routine queries are increasingly automated.

Modern HR professionals need business understanding, analytics and technology literacy, judgement, communication, organisational behaviour, labour and legal knowledge, and stakeholder management.

For programme selection, look at what is actually taught. NMIMS lists an introduction to people analytics and an enhanced focus on data and HR analytics. IIM Indore and IIM Amritsar list HR analytics, and IIM Indore adds psychometrics. XLRI’s HR functions include HR analytics roles. SIBM Pune’s new programme covers AI governance, digital ethics and bias mitigation, but it has no placement history yet. No programme protects you from automation; Skills do.

Which Best B-Schools for HRM in India Offer Strong Value for Money?

When comparing the best B-schools for HRM in India, value cannot be reduced to average CTC divided by fees. CTC is not take-home pay, and fee structures are not always comparable. A fair assessment weighs programme fee, HR-specific placement evidence, recruiter strength, career relevance, alumni ecosystem and opportunity cost. This article does not produce a CTC-to-fee ratio for any programme.

  • TISS has a published total course fee of approximately ₹2.035 lakh, dramatically below most private programmes. Its value case is strong on cost, though no HR-specific salary is quoted here.
  • University of Delhi MBA (HRD) lists ₹53,980 in the 2024–25 fee documentation, the lowest figure in this article. Placement disclosure is thinner, so weigh that against the fee, and confirm the current cycle’s fee.
  • XISS at ₹12,05,500 (2026–28, hostel extra) is well below several private peers.
  • IIM Trichy (₹19.5 lakh for 2026–28, excluding deposit and mess advance) and IIM Indore (₹20.70 lakh course fee for 2026–28) sit in the IIM range. IIM Trichy’s 2% fee-waiver scheme can lower the cost for eligible students.
  • XIM University lists ₹22 lakh in two-year course fees for 2026, and additional institutional charges apply, so the total is higher than that figure.
  • IMI Delhi, MDI and SCMHRD cost roughly ₹23.54 lakh, ₹26.55 lakh and ₹25.82 lakh in programme or academic fees. Their published HR outcomes (₹16.32 LPA in 2023–25 for IMI, ₹24.8 LPA in 2024–26 for MDI, ₹22.16 LPA in 2023–25 for SCMHRD) refer to different years and cohorts.
  • JBIMS MHRD, NMIMS and SIBM Pune have current fees that should be taken from their own admission notices or fee schedules.

A high-fee programme can still make sense if its recruiters match your target role. A low-fee programme is poor value if it does not lead where you want to go. Loan repayment depends on take-home pay, not CTC.

Which Best B-Schools for HRM in India Can You Target Through CAT, XAT, SNAP and Other Exams?

Entrance ExamRelevant HR Programmes

NMAT by GMACNMIMS MBA Human Resources; XIM University
CMATXISS PGDM-HRM
GMATIMI Delhi; XIM University
MAH-CETJBIMS MHRD
XGMTXIM University

TISS MA HRM & LR uses CAT for the cycles above. TISS-NET and CUET-PG are not its current route. Each institute also runs its own selection stages, so a good score is necessary but not sufficient.

SNAP opens two different Pune options: SCMHRD’s established MBA with an HR specialisation, and SIBM Pune’s new dedicated HR-and-AI MBA. They are separate institutes and separate programmes.

If you are targeting programmes through CAT, XAT, SNAP and NMAT, you need an application strategy that reflects the schools you want, since exam formats, formulas and timelines differ.

How Should You Choose Among the Best B-Schools for HRM in India?

  • Decide how certain you are about HR. If you are unsure, a broader MBA or SCMHRD’s specialisation route keeps options open.
  • Identify the HR tracks that interest you (IR, analytics, rewards, talent, consulting).
  • Decide dedicated versus broader.
  • Check which exams you can realistically target, and how many you can take well.
  • Compare fees and financing, separating tuition from hostel, mess and deposits.
  • Compare HR-specific placement evidence, and note which programmes publish it.
  • Read the curriculum, not just the institute name.
  • Consider location, internships and ecosystem.
  • Check long-term functional flexibility.
  • Build a portfolio of applications rather than betting on one institute.

Location and Ecosystem of the Best B-Schools for HRM in India

When comparing the best B-schools for HRM in India, location does not automatically determine placements. Many institutes here recruit nationally, and a programme in a smaller city can attract the same recruiters as one in a metro. What location can change is convenience: access to corporate headquarters, HR communities, internships, live projects, guest speakers and alumni.

  • Mumbai (TISS, NMIMS, JBIMS): many corporate headquarters and HR communities within reach, which can ease live projects and guest sessions.
  • Delhi NCR and Gurgaon (MDI, IMI Delhi, DU): a large corporate belt, useful for internships and industry interaction.
  • Pune (SCMHRD, SIBM Pune): a significant industry base in manufacturing, IT and services.
  • Jamshedpur and Ranchi (XLRI, XISS, IIM Ranchi): residential-campus settings. XLRI’s recruiter list includes Tata Steel and many other national names, showing that recruiting is not limited by city.
  • Bhubaneswar, Indore, Amritsar and Tiruchirappalli (XIM University, IIM Indore, IIM Amritsar, IIM Trichy): campus-centred settings. Judge them by the recruiter lists and internship records they publish rather than by city size.

General MBA Programmes: Why a Prestigious MBA May Still Suit You

A strong general MBA can offer powerful alumni, consulting access, leadership roles, cross-functional learning and career flexibility. If you might want to move between HR, strategy and consulting, that breadth can matter more than specialist depth.

But institutional prestige is not proof of HR strength. If an institute reports only an overall MBA average and does not publish HR-specialisation compensation, you cannot infer what its HR students earn. A school with a high overall average has not shown that its HR stream earns that figure.

IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta and FMS Delhi are excellent general programmes. They are not among the 15 here because this article’s evidence does not show an HR-specific curriculum, recruiting or placement advantage for HR aspirants at those schools. That is an evidence gap, not a judgement on their quality. If your main goal is a broad consulting-and-leadership pipeline with HR as one option, they belong on your own shortlist.

SCMHRD is the one general MBA in the main set, because it publishes HR-specialisation outcomes.

Other Options Beyond These Best B-Schools for HRM in India

These are not backups. Each may fit in specific circumstances, and each should be checked against its current admission and placement documents.

  • IMT Ghaziabad (PGDM with HRM specialisation): IMT offers HRM within its PGDM range. HR-specific compensation has not been established from the evidence used for this article, which is why it sits outside the main 15. It may suit students in the Delhi NCR region who want to compare a broader PGDM with the dedicated programmes above.
  • XIM University’s broader MBA: the general MBA on the same campus as the MBA-HRM gives a wider route if you are unsure about HR.
  • Regional and university programmes: these may offer lower fees or easier exam access. Judge each on curriculum depth and published outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which are the best B-schools for HRM in India?

There is no single ranked answer. This article uses a non-ranked, evidence-backed shortlist of 15 programmes and asks you to match them to your goal, budget and exams. Established dedicated options include XLRI, TISS, MDI, IIM Ranchi, IIM Indore, IIM Amritsar, IIM Trichy and IMI Delhi. Lower-cost options include TISS, DU and XISS.

Which IIMs have dedicated HR programmes?

IIM Indore (PGP-HRM), IIM Ranchi (MBA-HR), IIM Amritsar (MBA-HR) and IIM Trichy (PGPM-HR) run dedicated HR programmes. Judge each programme's curriculum rather than making blanket claims about "the IIMs".

Does IIM Indore have a dedicated HR programme?

Yes. PGP-HRM is a dedicated two-year programme leading to an MBA. For 2026–28, applicants select it while registering for CAT 2025, and IIM Indore publishes separate PGP-HRM placement reports.

Does IIM Ranchi have a dedicated HR programme?

Yes. Its MBA-HR covers the HR value chain and publishes separate HR placement data. For 2026–28, CAT is part of the domestic selection process.

Does IIM Amritsar offer MBA HR?

Yes. It is a full-time, two-year residential MBA-HR. For 2026–28, admission uses CAT 2025 and a composite process with pre-PI and post-PI components.

Which entrance exam is required for TISS HRM?

CAT 2025 for the 2026–27 academic year, and CAT 2026 for 2027–28. TISS then applies its own selection stages. TISS-NET and CUET-PG are not the current route.

Is TISS HRM an MBA?

No. It is a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management & Labour Relations. Students compare it with MBA HR programmes because of its management-oriented curriculum and HR career outcomes.

Is XLRI good for HR?

XLRI's PGDM (HRM) is a dedicated two-year programme with defined HR thrust areas and a wide HR recruiter list. Its 2024–26 placement release combines BM and HRM, so no HRM-only average is available.

Is MDI Gurgaon good for HR?

MDI runs a dedicated PGDM-HRM. Its 2024–26 report shows an HRM average of ₹24.8 LPA and a median of ₹23.0 LPA, and the 2026–28 published fee is about ₹26.55 lakh. Weigh outcomes against cost.

Is SCMHRD good for HR?

SCMHRD's MBA offers an HR specialisation, and its 2023–25 HR-specialisation report shows an average of ₹22.16 LPA. It is a general MBA with a strong HR pathway, not a separate MBA-HR degree, and it is a different institute from SIBM Pune.

Should I choose a dedicated HR MBA or a general MBA with HR specialisation?

If you are certain about HR, a dedicated programme offers depth and a concentrated recruiter pool. If you might explore other functions, a general MBA keeps more doors open. Neither is automatically superior.

What salary can an HR MBA graduate expect?

It varies by programme and batch. Published HR-specific examples include IIM Ranchi MBA-HR at ₹19.02 LPA average (2024–25), MDI PGDM-HRM at ₹24.8 LPA (2024–26), NMIMS MBA HR at ₹19.08 lakh (2025–26) and SCMHRD's HR specialisation at ₹22.16 LPA (2023–25). IIM Indore's official 2023 PGP-HRM report, as historical evidence, showed ₹22.65 LPA. These are average CTC figures, not take-home pay, and not guarantees.

Which HR B-schools have the best ROI?

It depends on your goals. TISS and DU have very low published fees, XISS costs about ₹12 lakh, and higher-fee programmes may suit you if their recruiters match your target. Avoid simple CTC-to-fee ratios.

Is HR a good career after an MBA?

Yes, if you build business, analytics and people skills. The work is evolving rather than disappearing, and HR programmes report placements across consulting, FMCG, technology and manufacturing employers.

Will AI reduce HR jobs?

AI is automating routine tasks such as screening and query handling, but judgement, communication and stakeholder management remain human. Expect roles to change, with analytics and technology literacy becoming more important.

Which MBA is best for HR analytics?

Programmes with analytics in the HR curriculum are worth checking, including IIM Indore, IIM Amritsar and NMIMS. SIBM Pune's new HRM–Integrated AI Analytics MBA is designed around AI and analytics but has no placement history yet, while SCMHRD's established MBA offers HR as a specialisation.

Which programmes are strong for industrial relations?

TISS MA HRM & LR has labour relations in its degree title. XLRI covers employment and industrial-relations law, and IIM Ranchi, IIM Amritsar, NMIMS, JBIMS and XIM University include IR or labour-law content.

Can I move out of HR after a specialised HR MBA?

Yes, but it is harder than from a general MBA. Consulting and analytics roles are the more natural exits from HR-focused programmes.

Is work experience necessary for HRM programmes?

Requirements differ by programme and admission cycle. XIM University, for example, considers relevant work experience in final selection, and IIM and other selection formulas often include it. Check each institute's current criteria.

Which exams should I take if I want to study HRM?

CAT opens the widest set of programmes here. Add XAT for XLRI, IMI Delhi, XISS and XIM University, SNAP for SCMHRD and SIBM Pune, NMAT for NMIMS and XIM University, CMAT for XISS, and MAH-CET for JBIMS. Choose based on the programmes you genuinely want to attend.

The questions below address recurring decisions students face while comparing the best B-schools for HRM in India.

Conclusion: Building Your Shortlist

A useful shortlist of the best B-schools for HRM in India should reflect your target HR function, entrance exams, cost constraints and appetite for specialisation.

The best B-schools for HRM in India are not defined by one ranking. They depend on how your profile matches each programme’s structure, cost and evidence. A good score in one exam does not decide which programme fits you.

Here are a few example profiles:

  • Certain about HR and interested in labour relations: compare TISS, XLRI and the programmes with IR or labour-law content, and check the exams each requires.
  • Analytics-leaning: compare IIM Indore, IIM Amritsar and NMIMS, and consider SIBM Pune’s new programme only if you accept an untested cohort with no placement history.
  • Budget-sensitive: compare TISS, DU and XISS, then weigh each against the placement evidence available, and check JBIMS MHRD’s current notice.
  • Wanting transparent HR outcomes: start with programmes that publish HR-specific figures, such as IIM Ranchi, MDI, IMI Delhi, NMIMS and SCMHRD.
  • Open to HR and other functions: consider SCMHRD’s specialisation route or a broader MBA.
  • Strongest in CMAT, NMAT or SNAP rather than CAT: build your list around XISS, NMIMS and XIM University, or the two Pune options, keeping SCMHRD’s established HR specialisation and SIBM’s new programme distinct.

Your next step is to build an exam-and-application shortlist based on the programmes you genuinely want to attend. List the exams they require, the registration and test dates, your realistic scores and the fees. Then confirm every figure on each institute’s official page before you apply.
